Om is the central, most prominent feature is the sacred syllable Om (or Pranava Mantram), often rendered in the unique Tamil script style. It is represented by the elaborate, swirling, and curved lines that dominate the center of the backplate. The “Om” symbol represents the primordial sound of the universe and the essence of ultimate reality.
The Vel (spear), Lord Murugan’s most powerful weapon, is subtly integrated into the design. It is represented by the straight, vertical staff that appears to bisect the circular elements of the Om symbol. The flame of the lamp, when lit, would rise from the oil bowl and sit right beneath the Vel, further highlighting its significance as a symbol of divine wisdom and the power to vanquish ignorance.
Mayil, the Peacock, Lord Murugan’s celestial mount (vahana), is prominently featured on the sides.
-
- The Peacock’s head is clearly visible, facing left.
- The Peacock’s body and ornate tail feathers form the lower-left and lower-right parts of the backplate, integrating seamlessly with the base of the Om symbol. The peacock symbolizes beauty, pride, and the ability to consume all negative habits.
